AI and Healthcare in Social Media: Proceed With Caution

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the talk of the town in any career field. For me, it's like winning the lottery. How great is it that I can actually get some insight and helpful tips when writing content for social media?! Using programs like ChatGPT can make your life a whole lot better when you have "writer's block" and can't write a coherent sentence. However, there are a couple of things to be aware of when using AI to write content, especially healthcare topics.


AI is basically algorithms produced by humans, so there can be some bias and misinformation when using it to gain knowledge for certain healthcare topics. General information can be generated but when you are discussing in-depth health problems, ask an expert in the field. They are specialized and can give clear information. A lack of transparency can cause mistrust with the patients who follow you on social media. (This is not just for healthcare but influencers and other organizations.)


Because of patient interaction on social media, it's important to let them understand what you publish is for educational purposes only. They should never be encouraged to self-diagnose based on what you may have written and you should NEVER diagnose a patient on social media. (All sorts of violations with that one but that can be covered at another time.) If you are pulling from an AI source, information can get tangled. Potentially, this can become a liability if you don't have a clear message on why you are sharing the information. A good rule of thumb is to put a disclaimer on your platforms to let your audience know that information you share is for educational purposes only.







I have said all of this, not to dissuade you from using AI, but to be careful about the information that is generated. AI may not be brand new but we are still learning about the capabilities it has and the limitations it may have in regards to content creation.
